What a week we had at our inaugural Vancouver Women in Tech event.  So many highlights and cool environments. 101 speakers, 100 volunteers, 29 supporting orgs and over 500 incredible people involved! COMMUNITY ACHIEVED! Pics here

The Regatta is a curated collection of events, workshops and conversations designed to connect women in tech to mentors, peers, resources and to the power of community. We will dwell in the realm of what’s possible, rather than simply what is.

The WiT Regatta is an inclusive event. Regardless of your area(s) of expertise, all genders and career levels are welcome and encouraged to participate.

This week is about tapping into our dynamic, talented community.  The Regatta has been organized in collaboration with BC’s Women in Tech Coalition: theplatform.tech that includes 30 local and provincial women in tech groups. We’ll come together to amplify careers, actualize goals, define the future of tech and blow our own minds.

Vancouver is now joining this international event series with Seattle and Amsterdam.

Monday Kick off opening party– Resource reception featuring over 30 orgs from our vibrant city that support women and girls in tech- all during one night, under one roof (at the fabulous Science World! ) Connect with industry leaders who can help you find new opportunities, provide you with valuable networking and powerful insights to push your career to the next level.

  Opening notes by Jill Tipping (CEO of the BC Tech Association) at 6:15 pm.  Doors open at 6:00 pm

Port Tracks: During the week we’re hosting 22 breakout sessions across the city (see venue map below).  Sessions are grouped thematically and each session will be hosted at one of five ports.  Attend all, or create a personalized itinerary aligned to your specific interests.

  • Port 1: Tech Mavens (keeping you relevant in tech)  We’ll be talking about everything from AI, to Crypto-Currency, to growing as a coder.
  • Port 2: Inclusive Culture (Allyship)  The focus here is on ending gender bias in the workplace & building stronger, more diverse teams.
  • Port 3: Leadership (CEO’s & Startups)  We’ll hear from a diverse group of CEO’s and startup leaders who will discuss multi-dimensional leadership, building credibility and avoiding isolation.
  • Port 4: All about YOU (Build your story)  This is all about you- being bold, intentional and building resilience.  Pump up your side hustle and put some mojo into your personal brand.
  • Port 5: Career Acumen (Building relationships) Learn about how storytelling, mentorship, and meaningful connections will help you meet your career goals and win the race.

Closing Celebration:  Enjoy the last day of our WiT Regatta Week at the fabulous new Leisure Center. Our pop in events will include meditation by candlelight, get a new linked in photo in our photo booth, meet new friends in our connection cafe and lots more.

    Join our debate: Is the discussion around ethics keeping up to the pace of technological advancements? Should ethics shape what we develop and what are the trade-offs? Topics that will be explored include: - Security and privacy and data: a shared responsibility and the important role that the tech sector, customers, companies and governments play in protecting and defending the internet -- and ourselves from data breaches. - AI and machine learning: How do we as developers and consumers deal with AIs being developed for usages we might not perceive as ethical.

    The explosive growth of Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies has fostered a new marketplace and created new foundations and trends for our global economic and social systems. While these tech platforms remain largely cryptic concepts for most people, they are arguably becoming mainstream. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are experiencing increasing uptake from regular businesses including Whole Food and Expedia, and Blockchain is being piloted by dozens of governments.     This session is designed for those in positions of power (men, executives, leaders, business owners, decision-makers) who want to help end bias in the workplace but don’t know how. This will be a safe space for you to learn practical strategies, skills, and tactics to support and champion the underrepresented - women, people of color, people with disabilities, LGBTQ, parents, caregivers and people of all ages.

    Innovation Playground - Showcasing the future (from 6 - 9 pm)
    SAP At the WIT closing party, SAP d-shop - a maker space that showcases technology trends, the latest gadgets, and promotes innovation & creativity - will showcase 3-d printing in action, an IoT project, will play music from a piece of paper, and show how to go beyond programming and build on a robot, attach sensors, electronics and other cool things. VIRTRO Virtro Entertainment develops and publishes VR and AR games and experiences. At the WiT closing party Virtro will playtest some games, just like their first VR title, Run Dorothy Run - an immersive Endless Runner and Rhythm Virtual Reality console game, with a cheeky take on the literary classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The Zombie Donuts, their first mobile VR game uses a Marshmallow blaster to knock down the zombie donuts and in the candy wonderland. Virtro is a creative company building the foundation to take a dominate position in VR & AR games.

    What is mindfulness and how can it benefit us in our daily lives, not as an obscure concept, but as something that improves our personal and professional lives and creates a contented mind.
